Rooftop Guide: Applying Coating to a Metal Roof

After decades of working in the roofing industry, we’ve invented and optimized the ideal system for applying coating to a metal roof. When it comes to designing solutions for adhesive and coating application, we believe simple is better. It would be easy to add controls, valves, and gauges, but as we listen to our customers we consistently hear them say, keep it simple. Roofing contractors are able to produce superior work more efficiently in less time. With increased productivity, contractors are seeing increased profitability. Meet the adhesive and coating solution developed by roofing contractors for roofing contractors.

Selecting a RollerSelecting a Spreader

Step One: Selecting The Right Roller

The application of coating to a metal roof can be accomplished with Rooftop Equipment’s Profile Rollers, which are constructed to fit over the rib of a metal roof panel. Rooftop offers seven standard Profile Rollers to match the profile of the most common rib shapes.  If one of our standard Profile Rollers does not match your rib, Rooftop can make a Custom Profile Roller to match any rib of a metal roof panel.

Measuring the Rib of a Metal Roof

To identify which Profile Roller matches the metal roof rib, simply measure 4 dimensions of the panel.

  1. Rib Frequency. This is the distance from the upper left corner of one rib to the upper left corner of the next rib
  2. Rib Height. This is the vertical, not the angled, distance from the lower flat of the panel to the heighest point of the rib
  3. Top Width. This is the distance across the top of the rib.
  4. Base Width. This is the distance across the bottom of the rib.

Choosing between a Standard or Custom Profile Roller

With this information, compare the measurements to the seven standard rib profiles. Once the profile has been identified orders can be placed using the name of that profile. If the dimensions of your rib do not match any of the standard profiles then submit the dimensions for a Custom Profile Roller.

Step Three: Tips on What to Order

Obviously, every roof and every roofing crew is unique, however here are some guidelines from common orders we receive.

  • One Profile Tank Spreader is good for a crew of 4-5 workers.
  • Replacement Rollers can last up to 3 days, if properly sealed each day and if the coating is water based such as Acrylic.
  • When using silicone, rollers must be replaced each day.
  • Most roofs can be coated with one Profile Tank Spreader and 3 spare rollers.
  • 2 Hand Roller Frames are recommended. This will allow one roller on the rib and one on the flat of the metal roof panel.
  • 6 Flat Rollers and 6 Profile Hand Rollers is a good order for most roofs.
